Adebayo Adelabu has resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Power.

Philips News reports that Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally stepped down from his position to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State, in compliance with a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu requiring all political appointees seeking elective office to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

Adelabu’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated March 26 and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

This newspaper understands that the resignation marks a significant development within the Federal Executive Council as political realignments ahead of the next election cycle begin to take shape.

In the letter, Adelabu expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve in his administration and contribute to reforms in the nation’s power sector.

“I write with profound gratitude to Your Excellency to formally tender my resignation from my position as the Honourable Minister of Power, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I wish to sincerely thank Your Excellency for the confidence reposed in me and the opportunity given to serve our great nation under your administration. It has been a privilege contributing to the efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s power sector in line with your Renewed Hope Agenda.

“My decision to resign is to enable me fully pursue my aspiration to contest for the office of Governor of Oyo State and to dedicate my time and resources to that endeavour” the statement added.

Meanwhile, PhilipsNews reports that the resignation is coming days after he apologised to Nigerians for the ongoing nationwide power outage, assuring them that the situation is temporary and that efforts are underway to restore a stable electricity supply.

Adelabu expressed remorse that the disruption has caused hardship for citizens, particularly during the current dry season marked by intense heat, affecting businesses, schools and industries nationwide.

This newspaper understands that Adelabu tendered his apologies during a press conference in Abuja, the nation’s capital, on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

The Minister explained that the challenges were caused by factors beyond the government’s control but stressed that authorities are working round the clock to resolve them.

“I want to apologise to Nigerians for this temporary issue that is causing hardship, especially during this dry season where there is so much heat everywhere and where businesses, schools and industries are being affected,” Adelabu said.

According to him, the government was not expecting the situation but has intensified efforts to address it.

“It is not our wish to find ourselves in this situation, but some factors are actually beyond our control. However, we are not relenting. We are working on it 24/7 to make sure we return to the trajectory we achieved in 2025,” he said.
