INEC has released 2027 election timetable.
Philips News reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria’s electoral umpire, has announced the timetable and schedule for the 2027 general election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, January 13, 2026, where he slammed earlier reports which suggested that the electoral umpire had released the timetable for the election.
Amupitan said the release of the timetable for the general election was in line with provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022, as amended.
The INEC Chairman said that Presidential Election will hold on 20th February, 2027, while the governorship, senatorial and other elections will hold on the 6th of March, 2027.
Speaking at the briefing, Amupitan assured Nigerians that the commission is fully prepared to conduct the polls.
“The National Assembly elections will hold on the same date, while governorship and state assembly elections will hold on March 6, 2027,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Philips News recalls that INEC under Professor Mahmood Yakubu had earlier fixed Nigeria’s general election dates for the next four decades, as part of measures to curb voter anxiety and ward off logistical nightmares for the commission and other stakeholders.
