Top Breaking News in Nigeria:

Tinubu seeks Senate’s approval for fresh $516.3m loan

President Bola Tinubu has requested the approval of the Senate for a fresh $516.3 million loan from Deutsche Bank to finance a road project.

The request was contained in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during plenary on Thursday. According to the letter, the proposed loan will be used to fund Sections 1, Phase 1a and 1b of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, a key transport corridor expected to stretch about 1,000 kilometres in total, with the current phase covering 120 kilometres.

Politics & Governance:

Obasa Reveals Tinubu’s Choice for Next Lagos Governor [Video]

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the governorship ambition of the current deputy governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat. Obasa disclosed while speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial city.

APC postpones presidential, governorship primaries

The All Progressives Congress has shifted its presidential primary election, earlier slated for May 15 and 16, to May 23, 2026, while the governorship primaries will now hold on May 21, 2026, in line with a revised timetable for its 2027 general election activities.

The APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko, disclosed this at the end of the 186th National Working Committee meeting in Abuja on Thursday, announcing adjustments to the earlier schedule, including the postponement of key processes such as the screening of aspirants and the consideration of appeals. Meseko also disclosed that the screening of aspirants, initially scheduled for May 6 to May 8, including the presidential screening set for May 9, has now been rescheduled.

Business & Economy:

Oyedele backs reform, rules out policy U-turns

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on Thursday, assured investors that the Federal Government would not reverse its ongoing economic reforms, insisting that policy consistency would remain central to Nigeria’s economic management. The position was contained in a press statement signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie.

Speaking at the launch of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group Private Sector Outlook 2026 in Lagos, Oyedele said, “We are not looking back,” stressing that consistency in policy direction remains critical to investor confidence. He warned that mixed signals or abrupt reversals could undermine progress, noting that “businesses need to know that today’s decisions will still hold tomorrow.”

Entertainment & Celebrity News:

‘Tiktokers, influencers, everybody now a celebrity’ – Zlatan Ibile laments

Rapper and singer, Zlatan Ibile has expressed deep concern about the emergence of influencer culture and its impacts on the Nigerian entertainment industry. The singer lamented that music-making is no longer exclusive to professional musicians but anyone with considerable social media influence, including skitmakers, pranksters, TikTokers, and content creators.

“It used to be that artists were the celebrities, but now TikTokers, influencers, and content creators are celebrities. That is why you can see an influencer or skit maker drop a song and it blows up,” Zlatan stated in an episode of the Afrobeats podcast hosted by Shopsydoo.

Trump envoy wants Italy to replace Iran at World Cup — Report

An envoy to US President Donald Trump has asked world football’s governing body FIFA to replace Iran with Italy at the World Cup, according to the Financial Times.

US special envoy Paolo Zampolli told the FT it would be a “dream” to see four-time World Cup winners Italy at the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada despite the fact they lost in a qualification playoff last month. The suggestion was an effort to repair ties between Trump and Giorgia Meloni after the Italian prime minister fell out with the president after criticising his attack on Pope Leo XIV over the Iran war, the newspaper reported.

“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and (FIFA President Gianni) Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli told the FT.
