Philips News reports that Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, has died at the age of 64.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, Akin Alabi, confirmed the sad development in a tribute post on his official X handle on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

He wrote, “Good night my dear friend. Rest in Peace, Senator Mpigi Barinada. Sen Mpigi represented Rivers South East in the Senate”.

Mpigi, who served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, reportedly passed away on Thursday after a brief illness. The exact cause and place of death had not been officially disclosed as of press time, though family sources confirmed that relatives are mourning his loss.

A report filed by Vanguard Newspaper quoted a source as saying that the senator had been flown abroad for brain surgery after being diagnosed with a brain tumour; however, the claim had not been independently verified.

Photos of the deceased senator have continued to trend online as tributes pour in from colleagues, associates, and members of the public.

Until his death, Mpigi was regarded as a strong ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The late lawmaker hailed from Tai Local Government Area, in the Ogoni ethnic nationality of Rivers State. He previously served two terms in the House of Representatives, representing the Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency.

Senator Mpigi was a member of both the 9th and 10th Senates, serving in the current assembly until his demise.

A source who confirmed the development on condition of anonymity described the news as shocking.

“We are shocked over this news. I am short of words. I don’t know what to say. We are in pain,” the source said.

Senator’s Death Sparks National Reactions

According to emerging reports, the senator reportedly died after battling health complications, although official details surrounding the circumstances of the death are still developing.

The tragic news quickly spread across social media platforms, where many Nigerians described the senator as a committed public servant who played a major role in national politics.

Several political stakeholders have also expressed sadness over the loss, describing the late senator as experienced, influential, and deeply involved in legislative affairs.

Colleagues and Political Leaders Pay Tribute

Following the announcement, tributes began pouring in from fellow lawmakers, governors, and political allies.

Many remembered the senator for contributions to governance, constituency development, and national debates at the National Assembly.

Political observers say the senator remained one of the respected voices within Nigeria’s political landscape and maintained strong influence among supporters and colleagues alike.

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed the deaths of several serving and former lawmakers, developments that have often triggered nationwide mourning and political discussions.

Photos of Late Senator Trend Online

Images of the late senator have continued to circulate online as supporters share memories and condolence messages.

Some Nigerians described the death as a painful loss not only to the senator’s state but also to the country’s democratic process.

The emotional reactions highlight the impact the late politician had during years of public service and political engagement.

Nigerian Senate Reacts

Members of the National Assembly are also expected to officially honor the late senator with tributes and condolence messages during plenary sessions.

The Nigerian Senate has historically paid tribute to lawmakers who died while serving or after leaving office, often recognizing their contributions to democracy and national development.

Political analysts believe the senator’s death could also affect political calculations and leadership dynamics within the affected constituency and party structure.

Nigerians Continue to Mourn

As news of the senator’s death continues to spread, many Nigerians have continued to pray for the family and loved ones left behind.

Supporters have also called for the preservation of the late lawmaker’s legacy and contributions to national service.
