Davido says he is not interested in Grammys and Western validation.
Philips News reports that Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed a detachment from the need for Western validation, following his latest loss in the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th annual Grammy Awards (February 2026).
Despite receiving multiple nominations over the years, the artist indicated he is no longer focused on winning the award, stating he makes music for his people and Africa rather than the Recording Academy.
Speaking on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with Eddie Kadi, the singer said he has achieved so much in his career, performing across the world and receiving accolades, including back-to-back multiple Grammy nominations in the last three years.
The “With You” crooner explained that he is content with his achievements, and now wants to return to his roots by making unapologetic African music as opposed to incorporating Western sounds to appeal to international audiences.
His words, “This part of my career, I have performed everywhere, sold out every arena, I have been to three Grammys in the last three years. The music that is coming next is very Davido, it is very African. We have done it so I am not really looking to really do western sounds.”
Davido also spoke about the support he enjoys from his South African fans, claiming that “80 per cent” of the citizens of South Africa know him and love his music.
Meanwhile, Philips News reports that the singer has collaborated with several South African artists over the years and has received multiple certifications from the country’s music industry.
