Nigeria reacts to rising xenophobic attacks in South Africa as Senate President Godswill Akpabio reveals why the country won’t impose economic retaliation. Full details here.

Nigeria Responds to Xenophobia Crisis

Philips News reports that Nigeria has ruled out imposing economic retaliation against South Africa despite growing concerns over xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in the country.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this position clear while addressing the issue, emphasizing that Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu will pursue diplomatic and peaceful solutions instead of economic sanctions.

The statement comes amid renewed tension following reports of violence and anti-immigrant protests in parts of South Africa.

Why Nigeria Is Avoiding Economic Sanctions

According to Akpabio, Nigeria is committed to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with South Africa and avoiding actions that could escalate tensions between the two African nations.

The Senate President stressed that retaliation could harm bilateral relations and negatively impact citizens of both countries, particularly businesses and individuals who rely on cross-border cooperation.

Akpabio made this known while responding to the proposal by Senator Adams Oshiomhole that revocation of operational licenses of South African companies such as MTN and DSTV in Nigeria should be invoked against South Africa in retaliation for the xenophobic attacks.

This online newspaper understands that Senator Oshiomhole’s proposal was declined on procedural grounds.

The Senate President asserted that the Senate views the reported attacks as serious and will address the matter with the urgency it deserves.

However, the Senate has finally resolved to constitute a joint ad hoc committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives to address the rising cases of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

Rather than sanctions, Nigeria is focusing on:

  • Diplomatic engagement
  • Protection of Nigerian citizens abroad
  • Collaboration with South African authorities

This approach signals a preference for long-term stability over short-term punitive measures.

Rising Concerns Over Xenophobic Attacks

Oshiomhole’s proposal follows a surge in xenophobic incidents in South Africa, where foreign nationals—including Nigerians—have reportedly been targeted during protests.

Xenophobia refers to fear or hostility toward foreigners or outsiders, often leading to discrimination or violence. Xenophobia

Recent developments show the situation is becoming increasingly serious. Reports indicate that dozens of Nigerians have already sought repatriation due to safety concerns.

Protests in cities like Johannesburg and Pretoria have been linked to economic frustrations, with some demonstrators blaming foreign nationals for unemployment and social challenges.

Nigeria’s Diplomatic Strategy

Instead of retaliation, Nigeria has taken several steps:

  • Engaging South African authorities through diplomatic channels
  • Monitoring the safety of Nigerians abroad
  • Calling for accountability in cases of violence
  • Supporting voluntary repatriation for affected citizens

Officials believe that cooperation between both countries is essential to resolving the root causes of the crisis.

Balancing National Interest and Regional Unity

Nigeria’s stance highlights a broader commitment to African unity and regional stability. Both Nigeria and South Africa are key players on the continent, and tensions between them could have wider economic and political implications.

By avoiding economic retaliation, Nigeria is signaling a strategic effort to:

  • Preserve trade relations
  • Protect investments
  • Promote peaceful conflict resolution.

What This Means Going Forward

While the situation remains tense, Nigeria’s approach suggests that diplomatic engagement will remain the primary tool for addressing xenophobic attacks.

However, pressure is mounting on South African authorities to ensure the safety of foreign nationals and prevent further violence.

The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether these efforts lead to lasting solutions—or if tensions escalate further.

Meanwhile, PhilipsNews reports xenophobia is the fear or hatred of foreigners, often leading to discrimination or violence.
