The Federal Government has declared a Public Holiday in Nigeria.

Philips News reports that the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has declared Thursday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration across Nigeria.

This newspaper understands that the announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The Tinubu-led administration described June 12 as a historic date that symbolizes the sacrifices, resilience, and determination of Nigerians who played key roles in the country’s democratic journey.

According to the statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the values that underpin democratic governance and national development. The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance while encouraging citizens to reflect on their responsibilities in sustaining democracy.

The statement said: “The administration has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise.

“The Ministry of Interior, in coordination with relevant security agencies, will continue to maintain and strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property across the country,” Dr Tunji-Ojo said.

Ojo noted that a secure and stable environment is essential to the health of any democracy and to the broader project of national development.

The Minister called on all Nigerians to observe the holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection, urging citizens to recommit to lawful conduct, responsible engagement and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister said.
