PDP has declared Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 Presidential Candidate in absentia.
Philips News reports that the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
This newspaper understands that the PDP faction decided at a special national convention held at its secretariat in Area 10, Garki, Abuja, the nation’s capital.
However, the former Nigerian president was not present at the event where his nomination was formally ratified.
The Certificate of Return was received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker, Fred Agbedi.
The development was announced during the gathering attended by delegates and party stakeholders aligned with the Turaki-led group.
Speaking on Jonathan running for presidency, the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Ini Ememobong, said it is not the former President’s ambition but a call from Nigerians.
While interacting with journalists on Saturday after the PDP camp declared Jonathan as its presidential candidate in absentia, Ememobong said, “At a time like this, Goodluck Jonathan’s running is not his ambition but a call from the people for him to run.
“The next four years must be four years of healing, restoration, patience and nation building, and who is going to do that? The man best suited to do that is Goodluck Jonathan.”
Former President Jonathan is yet to officially comment on his election as the presidential candidate of the Turaki-led PDP camp.
Meanwhile, PhilipsNews reports that another PDP faction backed by Federal Capital Territory, FCT, minister Nyesom Wike, had elected Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate.
The Wike-led faction had also denied reports that Jonathan has emerged the opposition party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
