The House of Representatives descended into a heated session on Wednesday after lawmakers clashed over a proposal to invite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explain the alleged failure to fund constituency projects across the country. The debate quickly escalated into shouting matches, forcing the leadership of the chamber to intervene.
Philips News reports that the controversy began when Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in Abia State, presented a motion calling on President Tinubu to appear before lawmakers. He argued that despite huge public spending on infrastructure, many constituency projects had remained unfunded, leaving communities without the promised development.
While presenting the motion, Ikwechegh questioned the government’s spending priorities, saying Nigerians deserved answers over the continued allocation of trillions of naira to infrastructure while many critical projects in federal constituencies had stalled. He maintained that the President should personally address the House on the matter.
The motion received support from another lawmaker, who went a step further by proposing that the House suspend legislative activities for one week until the issue of constituency project funding was adequately addressed. The suggestion immediately sparked intense reactions across the chamber.
However, Yusuf Gagdi opposed both proposals, insisting that summoning the President was unnecessary because ministries, departments and agencies responsible for executing constituency projects should instead be held accountable. He also rejected the call for a one-week shutdown of the House, describing it as unjustified.
Gagdi’s position drew strong objections from several opposition lawmakers, resulting in a noisy exchange on the floor as members shouted across the chamber and attempted to outvoice one another. The disagreement briefly disrupted proceedings as lawmakers remained divided over the appropriate course of action.

Meanwhile, PhilipsNews reports that amid the growing tension, Tajudeen Abbas stepped in to restore order. The Speaker directed that the matter be subjected to a vote, allowing members to decide the fate of the motion through the House’s established legislative process. The outcome of the vote was expected to determine whether the proposed summons and other recommendations would proceed.
